Sunday: Rounds Family Hereditary Cancer Benefit @ 1:00pm - 5:00pm
In November of 2011, Elizabeth Cole (Rounds) was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33. Upon further study, doctors learned she carried a harmful genetic mutation on her BRCA2 gene which greatly raises your risk for developing breast cancer, as well as several other cancers. Following the diagnosis, Elizabeth had a double mastectomy and underwent chemotherapy treatments. Elizabeths six siblings were screened for the hereditary mutation as well. Unfortunately, three additional sisters also tested positive for the breast cancer gene. The youngest sister, Ellyn Rounds, went in for an initial screening in January of this year after learning of her positive mutation. She was also diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 24. Even more crushing news came two days later when Elizabeth learned her cancer had returned. In February, Ellyn underwent a bilateral mastectomy and began chemotherapy treatments with radiation to follow. Elizabeth is also receiving chemotherapy again and will need radiation as well. As you can imagine, two young sisters, who are also mothers, both fighting breast cancer at the same time, has devastated the Rounds family and shaken the entire community. Therefore, friends and family will be holding a benefit on August 3, 2014 at the Silver Lake Field Days Fairgrounds (rain or shine). The money raised will help Ellyn Rounds with her medical expenses and even possibly help other family members who need to take drastic steps in order to remain cancer free. The family, especially Elizabeth, is also committed to raising awareness about hereditary breast cancer and funding organizations such as the Basser Research Center which she feels has been a beacon of hope for her.
